Lubbock, Texas- A Place Like No Other!

Because Lubbock is the home of the world's most complete cotton production marketing and research infrastructure, Texas produces every type of cotton grown in the entire U.S.-and more of it than any other state. Lubbock is a progressive city with a population of 200,000. It is centrally located in the Texas High Plains, which is a high plateau (1000 meters elevation) comprising the southern tip of the Great Plains of the USA. This area of 9.25 million acres (22.8 million hectares) has a flat topography, fertile soil, and a semi-arid climate of warm days, cool nights and highly seasonal rainfall. These characteristics have enabled the Texas High Plains to become one of the world's dominant cotton production areas. Supporting "King Cotton," Lubbock is the center of an extraordinary array of resources devoted to genetics and breeding, agriculture production systems, harvesting and ginning, marketing and pricing, textile manufacturing, and textile product design, fabrication, and promotion.

The Texas High Plains has a history of leadership in cotton production and marketing innovations. The list includes cotton strippers for harvesting, module builders and transporters for harvested cotton, high volume instrument (HVI) lines for measuring cotton fiber properties, and electronic marketing of cotton.

The Lubbock Cotton Exchange has members from across the U.S. who serve both the domestic and export markets. Together they market 95% of Texas' cotton production and participate in buying, selling, and shipping cotton worldwide.

Lubbock is also the home of Texas Tech University, a major research and teaching institution with 25,000 students. The International Textile Center (ITC) in the College of Agriculture Sciences and Natural Resources, Texas Tech University, charged with:

1) conducting research that will lead to greater use of cotton and other natural fibers and
2) assisting the textile manufacturing industry in the efficient use of these fibers.

The ITC serves as a research, evaluation, and consultation center for the global textile industry.
